On this day, May 5, 1821, Napoleon Bonaparte, the former French ruler who once ruled an empire that stretched across Europe, died as a British prisoner on the remote island of Saint Helena in the southern Atlantic Ocean. He won a series of brilliant victories against the Austrian and Russian Empires but after his defeat at the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, Napoleon abdicated and was exiled to the island of Elba. He made a brief return to power in 1815 but was decisively defeated at the Battle of Waterloo, leading to his final exile on the island of Saint Helena. Some see him as a military genius and a champion of reform and progress, while others view him as a brutal tyrant whose actions caused immeasurable suffering and loss. His achievements continue to have an impact on the world today, and his military tactics and political philosophy remain the subject of study and debate.

✅ After Captain Phillip arrived at Botany Bay, he soon realised it wasn’t a suitable place for settlement. The soil was of poor quality, the supply of fresh water was inadequate, and the bay was too exposed, with the strong winds denying safe harbour for the ships. He later found a better area 12 kilometres to the north with an excellent natural harbour and a stream with a reliable water supply. He later wrote, “We had the satisfaction of finding the finest harbour in the world, in which a thousand sail of the line may ride in the most perfect security.” Governor Phillip persevered as he faced many challenges, including a lack of resources and clashes with the indigenous population before he set up a solid agricultural and economic foundation. Now, in 2023, we are in the middle of the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), an era of tremendous change and revolutionary technological advancements. Similar to the first Industrial Revolution, business leaders and their teams will have to preserve. To be successful, they will have purpose, be aligned on their strategic objectives, be a high performing team, and have the change leadership knowledge and skills to navigate 4IR. It has had an incredible impact, changing the way organisations operate and how we live and relate to one another. 4IR includes technological breakthroughs in fields such as artificial intelligence, robotics, the Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, 5G, genetic modification, and energy storage.
