Leadership Across Generations: Why I Asked a Different Question

For more than three decades, I have worked with leaders, executive teams and organisations navigating change.

Like many leadership practitioners, I spent years focused on questions such as:

  • How do we lead organisational change?

  • How do we improve performance?

  • How do we deliver transformation?

  • How do we achieve successful outcomes?

These remain important questions.

But over time I became increasingly convinced that they were not the most important questions.

The deeper question emerged slowly, through experience.

Not from a single organisation.

Not from a single project.

Not from a single leadership framework.

But from repeatedly observing the consequences leaders leave behind.

The longer I studied leadership, the less interested I became in what leaders achieve during their tenure and the more interested I became in what endures after they have gone.

That shift led me to ask a different question:

What will future generations inherit?

I believe this question sits at the centre of leadership.

Every leader inherits something.

Every leader influences something.

Every leader leaves something behind.

Whether that inheritance is an organisation, institution, nation, team, business, profession or family, leadership always operates within a continuum that extends beyond any individual leader.

This insight eventually became the foundation of Saeculum Leadership®, a doctrine built upon three principles:

INHERITANCE

Leaders inherit people, systems, institutions, cultures and challenges they did not create.

Understanding what has been inherited is the first responsibility of leadership.

STEWARDSHIP

Leadership is not ownership.

Leadership is stewardship.

Leaders are temporary custodians of resources, responsibilities and opportunities entrusted to them for a period of time.

LEGACY

The true measure of leadership is not simply what is achieved while in office.

The true measure is what remains when the leader has gone.

Leadership is temporary.

Consequences are not.
